There is always something for everyone in a PE class at Lehrman: stretching, balance, and coordination for the little ones, fundamental skills for the middle years, and teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play as they grow older.
Through our multi-dimensional curriculum, our physical education staff works with students in Early Childhood through 5th grade.
Students are taught the proper mechanics to perform various sports while improving their physical characteristics by focusing on strength, endurance, balance, flexibility and coordination, and developing
appropriate social skills with an emphasis on sportsmanship and teamwork.
Students play individual and team sports that are age-appropriate and are always in a positive and supportive environment. Children who incorporate fitness into their daily routine tend to develop regular exercise habits, which are important elements of physical and mental health, ensuring they will make healthy lifestyle choices in the future.
According to a meta-analysis published recently (2019) in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics,
“...physical activity, especially physical education, improves classroom behaviors and benefits several aspects of academic achievement, especially mathematics-related skills, reading, and composite scores in youth.”
To enhance our own campus court for PE periods, we have use of the nearby North Shore athletic complex for students in grades 4 and 5. They use the short walk to the facility as a warm-up for special hour-long PE periods twice a week. The 17 acres of fields and the fully air-conditioned and equipped gymnasium provide our students with a full range of opportunities for physical fitness and athletics.
It is our goal that every child graduates from Lehrman with an interest in athletics, whether it is team, individual, or just a pick-up game with friends. At Lehrman, we expose kids to as many athletic experiences and possibilities so each child can say as he or she encounters a game or sport “I played that at Lehrman” or “I know the rules to that one.” In class and in competition Lehrman’s athletics are all inclusive, presenting a safe and positive environment with something for everyone.
