Green anoles are often referred to as American Chameleons because of their ability to change color, or camouflage, in order to hide from predators that may eat it. Green anoles are native to the southeastern United States. You have probably seen these little critters in your backyard. |

General Information About Green Anoles Anoles are branch dwelling organisms that eat only live insects because they can’t see the insect unless it is moving. They are usually fed live crickets. In nature, the anoles drink the water they need from drops of dew or rain on leaves. In the terrarium they are misted daily by students. Anoles have small holes for nostrils, located on the tip of their heads, and slightly larger holes for ears, located behind their mouths. The eyelids of anoles close from both the top and the bottom. Anoles have five long, slender toes on each foot. Under each toe are tiny ridges that enable them to cling to many surfaces. Anoles are capable of dropping their tails as a defense mechanism. They are then able to regrow their tails. Green anoles are known for their ability to change color. They are usually green when in bright light or when warm. They are more likely to be brown when they are cool. They also change color in response to their surroundings. |
